Aberdeen oil service firm Sparrows Group hopes new appointments to its top team will help it capture a bigger market share in the UK and drive growth overseas.

Sparrows specialises in the provision of lifting, crane engineering and mechanical handling services to the offshore oil and gas industry.

The firm and its 2,350-strong international workforce will celebrate 40 years of business in the North Sea next year.

Joining the leadership team are Mark Beveridge and Martin Thomson, who have been appointed as European operations director and head of business acquisition and strategic development for Europe and Africa respectively.

Mr Beveridge has worked in engineering for more than 25 years and been with Sparrows since 2008. He moves to his new role after a spell as the business manager for drilling.

Sparrows said his engineering background would be key to understanding the technical challenges facing the industry.

Mr Thomson arrives from driller KCA Deutag, where he was the senior vice-president responsible for commercial activities globally. He has also worked for Total, Subsea 7 and GE Oil and Gas.

“A major focus of 2014 was implementing an organisational restructure that was focused on geographies to ensure we are well-placed to provide customers with a value driven service,” Mr Beveridge said, adding: ” The transition sets us up with a good foundation for the year ahead and we have brought Martin in to lead our business development activities.

“We want to be closer to our customers to provide them with a quality service that supports their drive for efficiency, reliability and safety of critical equipment and operations.”
