The Far East’s largest seafood trade event is taking place this week and a record number of Scottish firms are taking part.
Seasoned exhibitors, including Peterhead-based trio the Crab Company Scotland, Lunar and Denholm Seafoods, are joined at the 2017 event in Tokyo, Japan, by Scottish debutants John Ross Jnr (Aberdeen) and Sutherland salmon producer Loch Duart.
The Hebridean Smokehouse on North Uist and Scottish Fisherman’s Organisation are also flying the flag for Scotland.
The three-day show gets under way today, giving the Scottish contingent a chance to promote their smoked and farmed salmon, mackerel, herring, crab and langoustines to buyers in potentially lucrative new markets.
Around 35,000 visitors are expected through the doors.
As one of the largest consumers of seafood in the world, Japan is a key market for international suppliers aiming to tap into fast-growing demand for high-quality, sustainable produce.
Natalie Bell, trade marketing manager for Europe, the Middle East and Asia at trade body Seafood Scotland, said Japan Seafood Expo was “one of the most critical opportunities” for Scottish companies to do business in the Far East.
She added: “Among the dinners, tastings and chef demonstration activities, solid deals will be done, potentially with a significant impact on the businesses attending.”
