Angry crowds gathered outside the AGM to protest against Wood Group’s involvement in Israel.
Demonstrators claimed the company was making “money from blood” by building a power station that will provide 9% of Israel’s electricity, including for the country’s defence ministry.
The facility is located in Ashkelon – about 10 miles from the Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli-imposed blockade since 2007.
Protest organiser Dave Black of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) said Wood Group was being complicit with Israeli “apartheid” and occupation.
SPSC secretary Mick Napier added: ” They are making money from generating electricity and selling it to the Israeli military and illegal settlements.”
“Ten miles away the people of Gaza do not have sufficient electricity to pump clean water or to run the intensive care units at their hospitals, and people are living in hell and suffering.”
“Wood Group sees this as merely an opportunity to increase their profits. It is dirty, it is not making money from oil, it is making money from blood.”
The protest was supported by more than 10 organisations, including Unite the union.
Unite leader Len McCluskey said: “We welcome the campaign demanding that Wood Group end its involvement in supporting institutions that are perpetuating discrimination, settlement building and illegal occupation.
“Building a power station in Ashkelon is so directly linked to institutions of human rights abuses, such as the Israeli defence forces, and this could leave Wood Group open to allegations that they are complicit with these on-going justices.”
