The Scotland Office is championing the whisky industry – and taking the opportunity to highlight UK Government support for it – on social media.
A link from its Twitter account takes visitors to a website headed “Scotch Whisky: there may be more to it than you think!”.
It highlights the recent government grant of £11million to Edinburgh company Celtic Renewables, which aims to commercially produce transport fuel from the residue of whisky production.
Among other developments in the industry, it also points to a 2% cut in excise duty on spirits in the March Budget.
“Scotch Whisky is sold in around 200 markets worldwide and 38 bottles are shipped overseas every second,” the Scotland Office says.
A Scottish Government spokeswoman said Holyrood had been “working with the sector for many years – and calling on the UK Government to do more to promote Scotland’s food and drink”.
