News of strikes being called off across all sectors has put next week’s expected school closures on hold.
Just hours after Aberdeenshire Council released its list of schools that would close due to next week’s strike action, union representatives called off the pending strikes.
Armed with a new pay offer of a 7.5% uplift, Unison, GMB and Unite have turned to their members for a decision.
The new offer also came less than a day after Orkney Islands Council confirmed that strikes would have closed almost all of its schools.
The strikes were planned for September 6-8. School staff would have joined their fellow members in the waste and recycling industry.
Aberdeenshire and Orkney Councils have been approached for comment.
What Orkney and Aberdeenshire schools would the strikes have affected?
The strikes would have meant a major disruption to services in the north and north-east. Here are the 41 schools that council officers said would have had to close.
Aberdeenshire Council said earlier this week that all council-run nurseries would have closed during the strikes. The council told parents they wouldn’t have been able to run the nurseries safely due to staffing shortages.
And in Orkney, council officials were bracing for significant disruption across all of its island schools.
Here’s a look at how the islands would have been affected:
