A military truck was stationed outside the Sir Duncan Rice Library in Aberdeen yesterday as a recruitment drive by the British Army arrived in the north-east.
Students at the university were given the chance to found out about the opportunities on offer from joining the army as an officer after completing their studies as part of the With Heart With Mind campaign.
They were also offered the use of virtue reality headsets which allowed them to experience parachute jumps and armed combat.
Lieutenant Tony Maclean, who works with the Royal Military Police, spoke about the benefits of joining the army after finishing his university studies.
He said: “We’re focusing on officer recruitment for graduates.
“A lot of people think the army is all about combat, but only around 25% of officers deal with it. We have professionally qualified officers including doctors and engineers.
“Our offer for officers is pretty lucrative, and if people are not sure what they want to do after finishing university or are getting to that stage, it is worth considering.”
General Paul Nanson, commandant of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, also urged people to sign up.
He added: “The officer training programme will contribute to a master’s degree and individuals are nurtured and encouraged to develop themselves by internationally recognised academics, as well as some of the most respected soldiers in the British Army.”
One person who visited the recruitment drive was fourth year geography student Jessica Lee, who said: “It is very interesting and informative about careers in the army and everyone was very approachable.”
The recruitment drive will be back in the same spot from 9.30am until 4pm today.
