Aberdeen football legend, Denis Law, is set to become a real ‘Law Man’ this week after being awarded an honorary degree from Robert Gordon University.
He will be bestowed with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws on Thursday at a ceremony in Her Majesty’s Theatre.
The Powis-born star, now aged 77, was renowned for his prolific playing career in the 1960s and 70s, strapping on his boots for Manchester United, Torino and Manchester City.
Later this year, he will also be receiving the historic freedom of the city from Aberdeen council, after a unanimous decision was passed by councillors in March.
The centre-forward was a world-class goal scorer and played for Scotland 55 times, jointly holding the Scottish international record goal tally with 30 goals.
He also set a Manchester United record for scoring 46 competitive goals in a single season.
His legacy continues to be felt in the north-east through the Denis Law charitable trust which aims to help disadvantaged children in the city through initiatives such as the recently-completed Cruyff Court.
Mr Law will officially open the new facility in Aberdeen on Thursday – but is delighted about the creation of the facility, designed to help youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds progress in the sport.
Another sporting initiative, backed by Mr Law – Streetsport – has also been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service after more than a decade creating opportunities for children and young people in Aberdeen.
After a lengthy career, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to football and charity.
The Denis Law Football Festival is curren at Aberdeen Sports Village until Sunday where it culminates with a family fun day which is open to all.
