And the Very Reverend Professor Iain Torrance has now been given a knighthood.
The Aberdeen-born theologian, 68, who has gained international recognition during his distinguished career, admitted to being “speechless” when he first heard the news.
But colleagues were quick to praise the “enormous contribution” which he has made to higher education, whether in the UK or as president of the theological seminary at Princeton in the United States.
He said: “It is an honour and a privilege to be recognised by Her Majesty.”
