The chief executive of one of Britain’s biggest companies has come out in favour of Aberdeen’s Kingsford Stadium plans.
Martin Gilbert, the joint CEO of Aberdeen Standard Investments, spoke passionately in favour of the controversial £50million proposals.
He said: “The founding of Aberdeen Asset Management in 1983 coincided with the year Aberdeen FC famously defeated Real Madrid to win the European Cup Winners Cup.
“I remember fondly the buzz of excitement felt across the north east as we celebrated our local club toppling one of the giants of world football.
“I’ve always been proud of our close association with the club – I was privileged to previously serve on the board and, between 1990-1993, our product range ‘Abtrust’ was displayed on the team’s shirts.
“Last year, our company underwent a significant merger and I now serve as joint CEO of Aberdeen Standard Investments. Adapting to the environment we operate in, we took this decision in order to secure the long term success of the business.
“In a similar vein, I believe now is time for Aberdeen FC to be allowed to relocate to Kingsford to ensure its long-term success.
“I was encouraged by the decision of city planners this week to recommend approval for the Kingsford development.
“The exciting proposals will improve the match day experience for all fans and provide world-class facilities that will be enjoyed, not just by the club, but crucially the wider local community.
“I have no doubt this development will have a positive social and economic impact for our club, our city and region.
“That is why I’m all for Aurora.”
Aberdeen’s two universities have also backed the SPFL club’s plans for a new stadium, arguing the proposals will provide real economic opportunities.
Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, principal and vice-chancellor of Robert Gordon University, has given the project his backing with Sir Ian Diamond, principal and vice-chancellor of Aberdeen University echoing his support.
Prof Von Prondzynski said RGU was reaping the benefits of a modern campus at Garthdee with world-class sporting facilities proving attractive to international students.
He believes the Dons would also benefit from co-located facilities, such as those proposed for Kingsford.
He added: “Work done by Manchester City for the recent redevelopment of its stadium and facilities found that co-locating the stadium with the training facilities would significantly enhance quality and also the motivation of players.
“Co-location of facilities has also been at the heart of RGU’s estates strategy. We disposed of our various sites around Aberdeen and brought all provision to Garthdee.
“This has had a vital impact on our ability to share resources and knowledge and engage in leading innovation.”
Sir Ian Diamond maintained the Kingsford project would be beneficial for the area.
He said: “Building best in class sports venues and facilities for a wide range of sporting events and providers presents real economic opportunities for the north east.
“AFC’s plans for a new stadium, as long as there is a demonstrated commitment for all stakeholders to work together, when combined with the Sports Village and Aquatics Centre and other existing facilities, will increase our ability to attract major sporting events.”
