An Aberdeen University student has been banned from the road after being caught doing drunken doughnut manoeuvres while behind the wheel of his friend’s car.
Police were on patrol in the early morning of September 4 when they heard the sound of tyres screeching from within the Kittybrewster Retail Park and decided to investigate.
They activated their blue lights and stopped the car, finding 21-year-old Louis Gardiner in the driver’s seat.
He was breathalysed and found to have 94 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 milliletres of breath. The legal limit is just 22.
Gardiner, of Gyle Park Gardens in Edinburgh, was also uninsured to drive the vehicle.
He pled guilty to the two offences during an appearance at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday.
Defence agent Lynn Bentley said: “He is about to start his third year at Aberdeen University and had returned to Aberdeen for Freshers’ Week.
“He had been drinking in the company of friends, all but one of whom had left to go elsewhere.
“The vehicle was taken a short distance from Erskine Street to Kittybrewster Retail Park. There were no other vehicles there.”
Sheriff Gary Aitken ordered Gardiner to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and banned him from driving for 18 months.
