A special event marking the centenary of the First World War has been organised to open the north-east’s 2018 Festival of Social Sciences.
A week-long series of events has been organised by Aberdeen University to coincide with a UK-wide programme.
The festival begins on Friday, November 2 with The Great War Remembered, which will guide the audience through the outbreak of the war and some of the major battles that occurred through readings, poems, film and music.
It will also include testimonies read by The Golden Compass actor John Bett and singer Fiona Kennedy as well as students and staff from the university.
During the week, sessions will be held on topics ranging from growing up in Aberdeen in the 1960s through to cyber security and artificial intelligence.
Talks about medicinal cannabis use, adult literacy in Rwanda and ancient Egyptian burial practices are also on the programme.
Organiser Chris Croly said: “We are delighted with the line-up for the Festival this year.
“The diversity of topics reflects the strength and diversity of social science across Aberdeen University.
“This is a great chance for people to hear about some of the most important research being conducted by the university, and it’s all free.”
