A leading Aberdeen politics professor has said that Labour “lost votes on all sides”- but has warned the SNP’s popularity may “have hit a ceiling”.
Michael Keating, professor of politics at Aberdeen University and a director of the Centre on Constitutional Change argued Labour had also lost their bedrock of working class support in Scotland and was now haemorrhaging votes.
He said: “The SNP did very well and having been ranging around 40% in the polls and the Labour party did extremely badly.
“Adding up the votes for the solidly Remain parties brings about 60% of the Scottish vote, and it is unclear exactly what Labour and Conservatives stand on the issue, so it is a victory for Remain in Scotland.
“The rise in the Liberal Democrats is nearly entirely down to Brexit while the SNP’s clear position has helped them.
“The Labour party have been losing votes from both Leavers and Remainers, and people who are both yes and no on the independence question.
“A lack of clarity on their position has cost them. However the SNP may have hit a ceiling in its support as there is no majority for independence.”
