A team of north-east researchers have developed a prototype tiny turbine which they say could save homeowners hundreds of pounds every year.
The group, from Robert Gordon University, believe the satellite dish-sized piece of technology has the potential to reduce the average property’s dependency on the National Grid by up to one-third.
They developed the 3D-printed piece of equipment in conjunction with Aberdeen firm Sustainable Urban Energy and created specialist facilities including a wind tunnel to test it out.
The company’s director, Neil Coulson, said: “Before Sustainable Urban Energy (SUE) could progress with the innovative turbine design the company required to obtain a proof of concept.
“To do this, expertise and access to specialised facilities were required and that could only be found at the university.”
A patent for the device is currently pending, with work continuing to bring the product to market.
