A major drive to help north-east students struggling financially is already close to reaching its halfway mark.
Aberdeen University launched the Covid-19 525 Bursary Fund last week, with the aim of raising £150,000 to distribute to those with money issues caused by coronavirus.
This includes people struggling to make ends meet through a lack of work, or who would have been relying on savings from a summer job to get them through the semester.
It will also support international students who are confined to halls and unable to return home, and those without the necessary equipment to participate in online lessons.
The university, which is also using the scheme to help celebrate its 525th anniversary, is asking alumni to help it raise £100,000 – the first £50,000 of which will be matched-funded through a legacy donation.
And it has announced that, within just four days, it has already generated £60,000.
Ron Donelson, executive director of advancement at the university, said: “We have an amazing and generous family at Aberdeen University, and we have been overwhelmed by the response we have received to the appeal.”
