A leading north-east energy expert has claimed independence will allow Scotland to reduce its energy bills.
Peter Strachan, professor of energy policy at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, said last night it was a “disgrace” the country was affected by fuel poverty and announced he was backing a Yes to try and eradicate the issue.
He believes independence will not only secure the supply, but the affordability, of electricity.
Prof Strachan said: “An independent Scotland committed to renewable energy will ensure both security of supply for Scotland as well as keeping electricity very affordable. Indeed the powers of independence can help cut household energy bills.
“I’ve long thought that it is a complete disgrace that despite being one of the most energy rich countries in the world, far too many people in Scotland are still affected by fuel poverty.
“Independence gives Scotland key powers which can help bring bills down and it is also very clear to me that Scottish energy will continue to be needed by our neighbours in the rest of the UK.”
Prof Strachan’s support comes as more energy experts have announced their intention to vote Yes, including Professor Sir Donald Mackay, former Chairman of Scottish Enterprise, and Doug Duguid, CEO of Enermech.
He added: “I shall be voting Yes this Thursday and I encourage others to do the same, so we can make Scotland’s energy riches benefit the people of Scotland.”
