Would-be boffins will have the chance to operate an underwater robot and investigate the making of a Formula 1 chassis as an Aberdeen university throws open its doors for British Science Week.
Robert Gordon University (RGU) is joining other venues throughout the city for this year’s celebrations which are being hosted by the Aberdeen branch of the British Science Association from March 13-23.
On Saturday, March 14, between 10am and 3pm, visitors will get a chance to tour RGU’s newest and largest building at Riverside East, and meet researchers from the School of Engineering.
Designers from Gray’s School of Art will also showcase their “design in action” concept that brings artists together with local food companies to develop new ideas.
The following week the university will host a talk on the safety of nanotechnology on Tuesday, March 17, at 6.30pm.
On Wednesday, March 18, a choice of two hour-long tours – aimed at school pupils from P4 to S6 – will be running on the hour between 10am and 3pm at RGU’s School of Engineering.
The first, run by Graeme Dunbar, will focus on underwater robots and how remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) benefit the oil and gas industry.
The second, led by James Njuguna, will investigate nanotechnology and composite materials and find out how research in Aberdeen is helping develop technology from computer monitors to Formula One cars.
Mr Njuguna said: “We are delighted to be taking part in British Science Week and opening up RGU to the public for a series of tours and events that showcase some of the exciting work that goes on at the university.
“The events are suitable for a range of ages and I would welcome anyone who would like to find out more to get in touch.”
All the RGU activities are free to attend. For more information or to register for the nanotechnology tour on March 18, contact Mr Njuguna on 01224 262304, or by email at j.njuguna@rgu.ac.uk.
