Aberdeen University event to explain link between processed meat and cancer

A north-east university has organised an event which explains the medical link between cancer and processed meats.
Aberdeen University professor Graeme Murray and Dr Silvia Gratz from the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health will be discussing the recent association between cancer development and processed meats such as sausages and bacon.
The duo will also lay out the background information about colorectal cancer before delving into research carried out by the World Heath Organisation which classified processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen – meaning there is sufficient evidence to link it as a cause of cancer.
Dr Gratz said: “The recent WHO classification of processed meats as Group 1 carcinogens has created many newspaper headlines about the risks of eating bacon.
“We’ll examine what we know about how the body processes meat and the link with cancer development.
“We will present the latest evidence we have and open the floor up for questions, discussion and debate.”
The free event called “Save your Bacon” is part of the Cafe Med discussion series at Suttie Centre Lecture Theatre, Foresterhill, from 6pm on Monday, February 22.
