Hundreds of students will venture to famous north east sands later this week for a unique annual competition.
Balmedie Beach will be the venue for the 2016 Robert Gordon University student land yacht race on Friday.
Around 130 third-year engineering students, separated into 19 teams, will go head-to-head on the coast by putting their yacht designs to the test.
Since February, the participants have been working to design and have built their vessels from scratch.
The project aims to encourage mathematical, analytical and team working skills.
Every yacht is made up of a 6.5ft go-kart style body including brakes, steering and a sail; and they were created using old bikes, tarpaulins and wheels.
They must be propelled by pedal or mechanical power and no pushing or pulling of the craft is allowed, regardless of wind conditions.
Sha Jihan, the module co-ordinator from the school of engineering: “As ever, we are very much looking forward to seeing the students’ land yachts in action at Balmedie.
“We are hoping for a fair wind on Friday to ensure we see them at their full potential.
“There is always a great atmosphere at the event and a good level of friendly competition among the teams, so best of luck to all involved.”
The teams will be given three attempts to complete a 328ft time trial across Balmedie Beach past obstacles, while competing for silverware.
Certificates will also be presented to the best three teams following assessment of build quality, functionality, safety features, performance timings and structural integrity of the yachts.
