Few students describe their university courses as plain sailing, but then, they don’t all share Graham Adie’s love for taking to the water.
The Peterhead sailing instructor yesterday graduated from Aberdeen University with a Masters in Electronic Engineering and spoke of how his involvement with their sailing team helped him push towards the great blue yonder.
The 22-year-old from Milltimber said: “The sailing was a great stress reliever and a release in the later years when university was getting quite stressful.
“Even just a change of scenery can help a lot if you are feeling a bit overwhelmed with work.
“For other undergraduates, I would definitely recommend joining a sports club or extra-curricular club of any kind, because it really adds another dimension to your university life, you meet a lot of new people.
“They are also a lot of fun and another way to immerse yourself in university life, I think people who don’t join clubs often regret it or don’t realise what they are missing out on.
“I’m now going to be working as a sailing instructor in Peterhead which I am very excited about especially as I was part of the sailing club throughout university and got awarded university colours for this.”
Yesterday was extra special for the Adie family as both his parents are Aberdeen University alumni and so were particularly excited to return to the university to see their son graduate.
He said: “I’m very happy and very proud to have graduated, but I think also it was great for my parents to see as they both graduated from Aberdeen University.
“Though that was back in Marischal College so this has been a bit of a change for them. But having that connection to Aberdeen University already has made today even more memorable for my family.”
