A group of Formula One fans from Aberdeen University are gearing up for a trip to one of the UK’s most famous racing circuits to compete in a national engineering challenge.
Team Aberdeen University Racing (TAU Racing) will be taking part in the annual Formula Student competition at Silverstone from Thursday to Friday.
Organised by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, the event invites young driving fans from universities across the country to design, manufacture and race a single seat car around the historic track, which is the current home of the British Grand Prix.
Around 40 students from the university will be travelling south for the race.
The pit crew of young engineers hope this year to get closer to the winner’s podium than ever before with their latest and greatest creation.
Heather Watson, the TAU Racing secretary, said: “TAU Racing placed 32nd in last year’s competition out of over 100 teams and we’re committed to achieving a higher finish at this year’s event.
“Following a strong recruitment drive this year we have gained lots of new members from range of academic years and now there are approximately 40 team members, which has helped us to prepare.
“Like last year, we have dedicated a large amount of time preparing and practicing for the static events, which saw the team come first in the cost, manufacturing and sustainability category.
“This is in addition to the many hours we have spent on the design and manufacture of this year’s car, which we are confident will help us maximise our overall performance and achieve competitive timings on the track.”
