Keep January light-hearted with an evening of comedy.
Monty Burns is 34, and introduces himself as a Pisces. He lived in Huntly until he was five and then in Aberdeen until he joined the Army at 16 years old. Since then, he has only been back to the city as a visitor, and this time it is for A Night of Comedy at the Tivoli Theatre.
IS COMEDY YOUR FULL-TIME JOB?
It pays the bills. Well, my phone bill.
IS ABERDEEN A GOOD PLACE TO COME AND PERFORM?
I’m from Aberdeen, so I speak the language. I absolutely love coming home.
IS THERE SOMEONE YOU LOOK UP TO?
Big Kev fae Torry. I once saw that guy eat a whole marble cake. Kid’s a beast.
WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COMEDIAN TO WORK WITH?
I’ve worked with most of my favourite comics, but if I could think really big, Kevin Hart.WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
Plan a kidnapping of Kevin Hart. He’s small – I could get him in a suitcase I reckon?
WHO DO YOU PRACTISE YOUR ACT ON?
Unsuspecting funeral-goers mostly, but other than that, comedy audiences. I write it all and you have to just honestly get up there and try it out the same as anyone. If you ever see a comic look relieved, they just tried a new bit and it didn’t stink.WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS AND INSPIRATION FROM?
Mostly word-play or being annoyed about something in particular. Sometimes I find a phrase or idea funny and figure out how I can get away with saying it and not seem insane.
DO YOU TOUR A LOT WITH WORK?
I work all over the UK and am planning on doing a lot more with the show this year. I’ll definitely be back in Aberdeen in February and May.
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO BE ON TOUR?
I love Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle, but the best fun I’ve had with a crowd was in Penzance. I legitimately think they had nothing else available that passed for entertainment.
HAVE YOU PERFORMED AT MANY FESTIVALS?
I’ve performed at a bunch of festivals and took a year off the Fringe last year to make sure I had something rock-solid to take up in 2017.WHAT IS YOUR EDINBURGH FRINGE SHOW ABOUT?
#BitchesLoveChivalry is quite simply an hour of my best stand-up to date. No wishy-washy back story or sad tale with a happy ending, just fast-paced gags from start to finish.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE JOKE?
It is one of mine – Addicts can be addicted to anything, cocaine, crisps … either way, you lose all self-esteem and go through a lot of skips.
Monty Burns will be at A Night of Comedy, along with Adam Rowe. It is on at the Tivoli Theatre in Aberdeen this Saturday, January 14. See www.thetivolitheatre.com/what-s-on.html
