Thousands of people will enjoy a day out in Oldmeldrum this weekend for the 87th Highland Games.
A plethora of sports will take place at the Pleasure Park from 10.30am, beginning with the Glenfiddich Qualifying Heavy events.
These events are aimed at the next generation of competitors, aged 18-25, to give them a taste of the contests they potentially could take part in at future games.
The pipe bands will then join forces – with representation from Oldmeldrum RBL, Inverurie, Lonach, Huntly, Ellon and Kintore – and usher in this year’s official host, Colin Slessor.
Mr Slessor is well known as the star of BBC’s The Mart documentary, which follows the day-to-day activities at Thainstone.
Games secretary Gordon Fraser said the organisers were hopeful the weather be good as the crowds flocked into the arena.
And he added the event was proving to be as popular as ever despite the passing years.
He said: “Here’s hoping the forecast is correct as it’s looking superb, so hopefully the sun will bring a big crowd in.
“There’s a willing group of people who push to keep the traditions going and who share the excitement and enjoy the spectacle of the games.”
Throughout the afternoon, the traditional Highland events will take place, featuring seven heavy events including the British Caber Championship.
There will also be eight light events, tug o’ war and a Highland dancing competition. And there will also be a drum majors display and the Mace O’er the Banner.
In addition, there will be a display from the Yee’s Hung Ga lion dancers and a magician.
The Meldrum and Bourtie Heritage Society will also be hosting a memorabilia and photograph display and there will be a food tent with all profits going to Breast Cancer Now.
There will be a variety of charities and traders in attendance and a funfair in the top half of the field.
On Saturday night, Ollie’s Night Fever Disco will start at 9pm. This event is for over 16s and photo ID must be produced to gain entry.
