A weekend celebrating the life, work and controversial legacy of Alexander MacKay will take place in Rhynie this weekend.
Titled The Lubare and the Boat, the Afro-Caledonian festival will feature a series of events and activities run by Deveron Arts, including music, dance, art, a spirit walk and a lecture about the missionaries and explorers of Africa.
The inspiration behind the two-day festival, Alexander MacKay, was born at Rhynie. In 1876, he left for Uganda as a missionary with a boat and a printing press. During his years there, the Scottish scientist introduced new technology including wells, carts and lamps to the kingdom of Buganda.
The Lubare and the Boat Afro-Caledonian festival runs throughout Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, on Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15. For full programme details, visit www.deveron-arts.com
