From the moment the curtain rose at His Majesty’s and adorable tots in sparkly blue tutus teetered onto the stage, every heart in the audience melted.
That magical moment was just one of many throughout the Scott School of Dancing’s 40th anniversary show, aptly named Iconic.
Over the course of three – high energy – hours, the exceptionally talented young dancers took the audience on a thrilling rollercoaster ride through no fewer than 52 dances.
Highland dance with a twist
From pop music, West End Musicals and TV programmes to ballet, tap, modern, Highland, jazz, and contemporary, there were dance styles for everyone to enjoy.
Unable to stop my feet jigging along, the contemporary twist on Highland dance was a particular delight to behold.
Almost like a Highland dancing version of Riverdance, it was a joy to watch the budding young bravehearts twirling, leaping and skipping into the air to the sound of modern Scottish music.
Contemporary dance
Slowing the pace down, the contemporary dance pieces – performed to the evocative sound of the Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi – were simply stunning and effortlessly elegant.
The colourful carnival atmosphere was never far away though with salsa, samba and daring Strictly Come Dancing style lifts.
Wicked
Boogying in my seat was a given when the Rewind dance sequence began.
Turning the stage a bright green with their amazing costumes, the young dancers grinned from ear to ear as they danced and sang songs from the hit West End Musical Wicked.
Sensational singers
It wasn’t just the dancing that blew the audience away though as the solo singers were out of this world too.
So good in fact that it surely won’t be long until they’re treading the boards in London’s West End.
Throughout the show, the energy never dipped for a second as the audience clapped, whistled and cheered on the young dancers, especially when they took to the stage to perform their Spice Girls dance.
It has to be said that the costumes were utterly incredible as every single dance brought something different from sequins and feathers to leopard print and tassels.
Some of the biggest cheers of the night went to the group of ex pupils who brought bucket loads of sass and attitude to the stage with their Beyonce dance mash-up.
Closing the show in spectacular style with a huge carnival piece, it was more a dancing ovation than a standing ovation as mums, dad, grannies and grandpas rose to their feet for a clap and a wee boogie.
After two years in the making, Scott School of Dancing can be super proud of what was truly an Iconic show to remember.
