The curtain has gone up on a brand new cafe-bar and restaurant set to open at His Majesty’s Theatre – with a sneak preview of how it will look.

The artists’ impressions released today show the stunning interior of The Terrace, which will have views over Union Terrace Gardens.

The new dining space has been created as part of a £675,000 revamp of the Box Office and foyer area of His Majesty’s, designed to create more space and re-invigorate the theatre’s glass annexe. The opening date will be announced soon.

The Terrace has been created by extending the mezzanine floor of the bar and care to the glass frontage, creating more room for diners but also offering a perfect view of the revamped gardens opposite.

The Terrace at His Majesty’s will be ‘perfect start’ to unforgettable shows

Theatre bosses say the café-bar and restaurant will be the perfect place to pop in for a drink or a bite to eat, from morning coffee and brunch, to light lunches and also pre-show dining.

Aberdeen Performing Arts chairman, Craig Pike, said: “We’ve all been through some tough times in recent years, so we’re even more determined to ensure our audiences have a great night out when visiting the theatre.

“Relaxing at The Terrace is the perfect start to an unforgettable performance as guests can move from dining into the auditorium with ease – and can pop back at the interval for drinks.”

His Majesty's new restaurant
The glass annexe of His Majesty’s will be transformed by the upgrade, including the new restaurant The Terrace.

“We’ve worked so hard to get this up and running through the summer and autumn. It’s a welcoming spot with great views and a wide-ranging drinks list plus some exciting dishes.”

The Terrace will help keep Aberdeen city centre vibrant and attractive

The glass annexe has been closed since April to allow work on the upgrade, which used funding available from Scottish Enterprise and Aberdeen City Council as part of the recovery and rebuilding stimulus after the pandemic.

Councillor Martin Greig, education and children’s services convener, said: “The Terrace is an attractive addition to His Majesty’s Theatre and the city centre. Spaces like these will really help to keep the area vibrant and attractive and we are delighted to have supported this new development.”

Craig Pike, chairman of Aberdeen Performing Arts, says The Terrace will be the perfect place to start an unforgettable night at His Majesty’s Theatre.

News of The Terrace’s opening comes after concerns were raised last week in a report to the council about the impact of the energy crisis on Aberdeen Performing Arts and its venues, His Majesty’s, the Music Hall and the Lemon Tree.
