Part thriller, part horror, set against the backdrop of Iceland’s hinterlands, Steinar Bragi’s The Ice Lands seems like it would have a lot to offer.
Four friends set out on a camping trip and find themselves pulled into a mystery right from the moment they crash their car in bad weather.
They find themselves stranded at a remote farm house and each attempt to leave the area is thwarted.
The tension builds in this perplexing thriller, and there is a constant feeling of “what is going on?”, but unfortunately it fails to deliver fully.
There are too many diversions from the main action into each of the character’s back stories, often at inconvenient places, and as the book nears the end it just becomes plain confusing – perhaps due to the translation.
This story doesn’t feel finished and I was left wondering what had actually happened.
