Estelle Maskame: Did I mention I’ll put you in my next novel?

Estelle Maskame
Estelle Maskame

She is the creator of the successful DIMILY trilogy of books which have brought her a global fanbase and transformed her into one of the biggest stars of the Young Adult literary scene.

And now, teenage author, Estelle Maskame, from Peterhead, is offering people the chance to have a character named after them in her next book to raise money for children with cancer.

The 19-year-old novelist has lent her support to the Get in Character campaign from CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people.

The initiative has been organised as part of a unique eBay auction, which runs until Sunday, March 5 and gives readers the opportunity to bid to become immortalised in their favourite author’s next book by having a character named after them.

Miss Maskame has joined more than 100 authors who are taking part in this year’s campaign with names up for grabs from the likes of Graham Norton, David Baddiel, Andy McNab, Michael Morpurgo, Veronica Roth and Holly Smale.

Get in Character has already raised more than £24,000 for the charity since it was launched back in 2014.

And the north-east youngster, who began working on her Did I Mention I Love You series when she was just 13 and signed her first book deal at 17, is pleased to be involved in the fundraising drive, which has already amassed significant money to help those affected by cancer.

The trilogy is now an international bestseller and she is currently working on a new Young Adult novel, which will be released by Black and White later this year.

Miss Maskame said: “I am delighted to take part in the CLIC Sargent Get in Character campaign, because it is an interesting, creative way to support the charity.

“CLIC Sargent has helped my family personally, so I would love to help give back.”

Last year, the organisation supported more than 600 children and young people in Scotland, giving out grants totalling £76,576.

Rachel Kirby-Rider, director of income and engagement at CLIC Sargent, added: “We can’t thank all the participating authors enough for being so generous with these once-in-a-lifetime offers for book fans.

“Every bid and the money raised from the auction will make a massive difference in the fight against cancer for children and young people across the UK.”

Miss Maskame mixed her studies in Peterhead with realising her ambition to bring her ideas to life on the page and has subsequently met scores of aficionados wherever she has ventured on her travels.

But she has never forgotten her roots and her determination to break new ground is one of the reasons why she has become a global star.
