Highland artist shares experience of getting lost in the Far East

A west coast artist has published a book on his experiences after he became lost in the Far East.

Rob Fairley became lost during a stopover in Dhaka en route from Nepal to the UK in 1992.

A chance encounter with a young girl, who became his guide, took the artist on an adventure – which he charted through a series of paintings.

Mr Fairley, who lived in Mallaig and on the island of Shona Beag, shared the sketches on social media in 2017.

They were accompanied with a description of the day and the events which accompanied each sketch – and garnered such a response, that the idea for a book was born.

A spokeswoman for Resipole Studios in Ardnamurchan, who published the book, said: “This a chance encounter with a young girl, who would become his guide and guardian, led him on an unforgettable adventure amidst the bustling streets of Dhaka; documented at the time by Fairley, through a series of paintings in his sketchbook.”
