Book review: 30-Second Quantum Theory: The 50 Most Important Thought-provoking Quantum Concepts, Each Explained In Half A Minute by Sharon Ann Holgate and Brian Clegg
If you are one of those people who sit happily watching Brian Cox on TV explaining physics and feeling as if you understand while he is talking, but unable to explain it properly to someone else, this book will help deepen your understanding.
It’s extremely well constructed and thought through. There’s a three-second flash – a one-sentence summary, the main entry, a 30-second theory, then a three-minute thought to promote further exploration. Plus indications of other relevant or related therories and glossaries.
It’s not all theory though – there are descriptions of how lasers, transistors and MRI scanners work as practical applications of the theories.
Those with a science background may find it easier to dip in and out than a novice who may find it more helpful to start at the beginning and work their way through – building on their knowledge gained along the way.
By the time you have finished you should be able to explain the concept of the Schroedinger’s cat thought experiment and whether the cat is dead or alive and why.
