Peter Donaldson explains in the introduction to his book that “as a museum, it is not our job to glory or decry the methods of warfare employed at that time, but we can still admire the complex logistics of supplying the front line in those days”.
And that is exactly what the book does. It looks at all features of the war and how the developments in transport played a big part.
The photographs, taken from the museum’s archives, are fascinating and demonstrate how people from all walks of life were involved in the war effort.
Many different modes of transport are explored from the use of railways taking supplies to the front lines to why Model T Fords were converted into ambulances – even the role of horses is explained.
At a time when there are so many WWI books coming out, this one offers an aspect that is completely different.
