Brora-based author, Sharon Dabell’s latest work of historical fiction takes readers back to 1547, the time of the Rough Wooing, for a story of marriage and cross-border feuding. This, her third novel, was inspired by her own family research into the Border Reivers.
The novel is told from the perspective of Elizabeth Fenwick, a young girl from the English Borders Reiving gentry who is facing an arranged marriage with Richard Musgrave, a man who terrifies her. Elizabeth’s personal troubles occur against a backdrop of hostility and uncertainty as Henry VIII attempts to force a marriage between child King Edward VI of England and the infant Queen Mary of Scotland in order to seize control of Scotland. The struggle between Scotland and England makes the Borders a very dangerous place to live, with some clans siding with Henry VIII for safety.
If you are interested in Scottish history or enjoy historical fiction, I recommend reading this book. A trustee of The Battle of Prestonpans 1745 Heritage Trust , Sharon is generously donating proceeds from sales of the book to the Trust.
