This year marks the 150th anniversary of Stornoway’s establishment as a port. During its time it has witnessed many arrivals and departures.
Through a series of
poems, author and poet Donald S Murray charts Stornoway’s history from the Mesolithic period right up to its present day use as a bustling port.
Stand out events include the tragic sinking of the
Iolare, which sank in sight of the harbour; the departure of many islanders who left on the Metagama in the 1920s to start a new life in Canada and the surprise arrival of Russian refugees seeking refuge from the Soviet State.
Day to day events of the harbour are also included along with lovely illustrations by Douglas Robertson, a long-time collaborator of Donald S Murray, an author and journalist born in Ness on the Isle of Lewis.
