Book Review: Set in Scotland- A Film Fan’s Odyssey
ByLindsay Macdonald
Paperback by VisitScotland, free from tourist centres and some bookshops
Scotland’s landscapes, castles and cities are often
described as photogenic, so it is no surprise the
country has provided the location for over 100 movies.
VisitScotland has published this slim and colourful book to cater for the growing trend of “set-jetting” by visitors and Scots alike.
Rock-strewn Harris, for instance, while often likened to the surface of the moon, was actually used for the planet Jupiter in 2001: A Space
Odyssey. And Doune Castle near Stirling appeared as Castle Anthrax in Monty Python and The Holy Grail.
Our cityscapes have also had a starring role. While Edinburgh has mainly “played itself”, Glasgow has stood in for Philadelphia, San
Francisco, New York and even The Vatican.
