A Moray music group will kick off its ninth decade by assembling performers, young and old, in a stirring celebration of Scotland’s traditional tunes.
The Elgin Strathspey and Reel Society was formed in 1936, and, last year, celebrated its 80th anniversary by playing a special piece created just for the occasion.
The ensemble will take to the stage again next week, with conductor Ena Brian leading a “grand concert of fiddle music” at Elgin’s St Giles Church.
Members have enlisted Lossiemouth 17-year-old, Erin Ralph, to sing at the event. And watching Erin from the audience will be two of the society’s oldest fans – Ivy Hamilton and Iris Smith, who danced for the music group during the 1940s.
Last night, Erin said she was thrilled about getting to showcase her skills in front of Elgin Strathspey and Reel Society alumni.
The Lossiemouth High School pupil added: “The idea excites me a lot, it was already a pleasure to be able to sing at this.
“I’ve been singing properly for about two years now, and this is one of the bigger shows I’ve been asked to do.
“I’ll be singing some traditional Scottish songs, that’s what I love to perform.”
Erin has taken part in amateur productions of Fame, Grease and Footloose, and is keen to study music at university after graduating from secondary school this summer.
The evening will be compered by John Mathieson, and Huntly fiddler Barbara Anderson has been lined up as another star attraction.
The concert will take place on Friday, February 24, at 7.30pm and tickets will be available at the door on the night.
