Emeli Sandé said it had taken her a long time to be herself but she now feels “happier than ever” after announcing she is in love with a woman.
The former pupil of Alford Academy said that she has found her soul mate in her classical pianist partner Yoana Karemova.
First speaking publicly on her relationship in an interview with Metro, Emeli Sandé then posted a photo of herself and her new partner on Saturday. She followed this with a heartfelt message.
She said: “It’s taken me many years to find the strength to be myself. I’ve struggled for a long time to accept myself as I am.
“I’m so lucky to have found my soul mate Yoana, she’s such an extraordinary woman. Falling in love with her gave me the strength I needed. Feels so good to be in love and I feel happier than ever.
“I’m deeply touched by all your messages of love and support. Thank you so much for your acceptance and kind wishes. Feels like a huge weight has been lifted, here’s to a new beginning in truth and happiness.”
Sandé had previously been married to marine biologist Adam Gouraguine before they divorced in 2014.
The 35-year-old, who performed at the Concert For Ukraine on March 29, said she met her new partner when she was learning about classical music just after lockdown.
Ms Karemova is a classical pianist and has won several awards for her playing. Originally from Bulgaria, she studied at Trinity College of Music in London and has worked with many renowned pianists.
Sandé said she has already introduced her new partner to her parents in Aberdeenshire where the star grew up.
