Uptown Funk joins million-seller club

Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk has become the latest song to join the million-seller club.

The soul-funk song, which featured US singer Bruno Mars, is the 158th UK single to record seven-figure sales, the Official Chart Company said.

The song has been on sale for ten weeks, with Ronson joining luminaries including The Beatles, Queen and Elton John in passing the milestone, which he said was “insane”.

He told Officialcharts.com: “It’s definitely an amazing milestone to be in this club with all these massive superstars.

“On behalf of myself and Bruno, I just want to thank everybody who bought this record and put us in this club.”

Sir Elton John’s 1997 double A-Side Something About The Way You Look Tonight / Candle In The Wind ’97 remains the UK’s biggest-selling single of all-time with more than 4.9 million sales.

Uptown Funk remains at three in the charts, with Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do, which features in 50 Shades Of Grey, topping the chart for a second week.

Hozier’s Take Me To Church, which has spent 21 weeks in the charts, climbs from three to two.

DJ Fresh is the highest new entry at four with Gravity, which features Ella Eyre. It bumped Rihanna, Kanye West and Sir Paul McCartney’s FourFiveSeconds down to five.

In the albums chart jazz singer Gregory Porter has scored an unlikely top 10 hit with Liquid Spirit, two years after it was first released.

The album only scraped its way to number 40 in 2013, but is now at 10 and shares the chart with big names like Sam Smith and Drake.

Porter, whose profile has been boosted recently by winning Best Jazz Vocal Album at the Grammys and a string of high-profile appearances on the Graham Norton Show and the Marks and Spencer Christmas advert, said: “So honoured that liquid spirit is being discovered … Let it continue … let the spirit free.”

Smith reclaimed the album top spot, with million-selling debut In The Lonely Hour climbing from four to one following his sweep at last week’s Grammys.

Ed Sheeran’s X remains at two and Drake’s If You’re Reading This You’re Too Late arrived at three following its surprise release on Friday.
