North-east artist Stuart Buchanan is showing more than 20 paintings as part of a two-person exhibition alongside fellow east coast painter Morag Smith.
Glasgow-born Stuart, a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, moved his family into a cottage in the old fishing village of Catterline, which was once owned by one of the area’s most celebrated artists, Joan Eardley. He carries forward a rich heritage of painting from the “Watchie” where, for the last 10 years, he has continued to develop his practice.
His works are immediately identifiable – solitary characters and silent couples resonate a peaceful solitude in richly textured oil paintings.
Johnshaven artist Morag Smith balances the exhibition with her distinctively gentle horizons, capturing fleeting moments of past journeys, delicately rendered in a soft harmonious palette.
The winter exhibition, at Gallery at Fifty Five, 55 Allardice Street, Stonehaven, runs until December 24. See www.galleryatfiftyfive.co.uk
