The project to transform Aberdeen Art Gallery has received a £250,000 boost thanks to a donation from the Marguerite McBey Trust.
Cash from the trust, which was set up to support the arts in Aberdeen, will go towards the targeted £10million required from outside sources for the ambitious redevelopment.
So far, £3,266,663 has been given by the public to help make the gallery on Schoolhill a centre of artistic excellence for generations to come.
The total cost of the project is £30million, and £10million has already been granted towards it by Aberdeen City Council – with an additional £10 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Once complete, the site will host an additional 10 gallery spaces, a community gallery, a new wing at the rear of the building, and new floor on top which will be clad in copper plating.
Buildings adjoining the Art Gallery will also be refurbished.
Jenny Laing, the leader of Aberdeen City Council said: “We are grateful to the Marguerite McBey Trust for this generous donation.
“As leader of the council I am proud this administration has pushed ahead with the £30million refurbishment of the Aberdeen Art Gallery, Cowdray Hall and Remembrance Hall.
“I am sure it will prove to be a wonderful asset for the city and will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.”
“This redevelopment forms an integral part of our city centre regeneration plans which will enhance our cultural offering and ensure Aberdeen can compete with cities around the world.”
