A north-east youth cafe will host its first artist in residence – after the talented youngster won critical acclaim for his portrait of renowned actor Sir Ian McKellen.
Peterhead student Steven Rae first came into the spotlight when he unveiled his portrait of the stage and screen star earlier this year as part of his advanced higher art project.
The 18-year-old never imagined he would actually get a response from the man who has starred in blockbusters such as Lord of the Rings and X-Men as well as a host of Shakespearian productions.
But that is what happened, as Sir Ian sent Mr Rae a card wishing him “all the best” for the future.
Mr Rae said he was “overwhelmed” when the Gandalf actor got in touch. He added: “I was in such a good mood the whole day.”
Now the teenager has been commissioned by the local authority to create a new work of art, and will act as the artist in residence at the Encounter youth cage in Peterhead.
Mr Rae has been given access to Aberdeenshire Museum Service’s archive of photographs and has chosen one to use as the subject of the painting. The image he has chosen remains under wraps.
The commission has also given him the chance to paint in oils for the first time. Work has already begun on the piece which will be unveiled at the end of the summer before he leaves to study architecture at university.
Encounter organiser Martin Danziger said: “It is great to provide Steven with studio space at Encounter. Steven is a talented young artist and we are delighted to be able to support him like this.
“Encounter is all about young people and creative opportunities and this is an opportunity to help nurture and celebrate young talent.”
The Encounter youth cafe is run out of the old Happit shop in Peterhead’s Drummers Corner.
The community centre runs weekly events for young people, as well as language classes for local residents.
Organisers have also hosted a number of exhibitions and performances in the town centre – including a recent visit by Scottish Opera’s portable theatre.
