Former veterinary nurse Kaz Cox was with her pooch when she noticed the stricken seabird between two rocks at a beach in Cornwall.
The little black and white birds, famous for their clown-like multicoloured bill, are rarely seen on the mainland and generally inhabit islands off the south west coast.
Kaz said that it was the first time she had seen one in the area in Bude, Cornwall, where she walks her dog twice a day.
She said: “I had never, ever seen one before. I didn’t think it was that small but it is so beautiful.”
