1) Karen Gillan

Karen Gillan

Inverness actress, director, and screenwriter – Karen Gillan is known for the role of Amy Pond, companion to the 11th Doctor, in the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who from 2010 to 2013.

In film, she is best known for portraying Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film series Guardians of the Galaxy and will reprise the role in Avengers: Infinity War

In 2017, she wrote and directed her first feature film, The Party’s Just Beginning.

2) Tony Curran

Tony Curran

Tony CurranAlso making a cameo apperance in the Doctor Who franchise is Tony Curran. The Glasgow born actor played the role of 19th Century painter Vincent van Gogh, in the  episode ‘Vincent and the Doctor’.

 

3) Chir Hoy

Sir Chris Hoy

The 11 times world champion and six times Olympic champion, Sir Christopher (Chris) Andrew Hoy, is another Scottish redhead to feature on our list.

Winning three gold medals at the 2008 Bejing Olympics, Hoy became Scotland’s most successful Olympian and most successful Olympic cyclist of all time.

 

4) Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton is a British actress, model, and artist. Residing in the Highland town of Narin, she is known for her roles in both arthouse films and large-scale Hollywood productions.

Swinton won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Karen Crowder in the 2007 film Michael Clayton. She also won the BAFTA Scotland Award as Best Actress for the 2003 film Young Adam, and has received three Golden Globe Award nominations.

 

5) Gordon Strachan

The former Scottish football manager and player – Strachan played for Aberdeen, Dundee, Manchester United, Leeds United and Coventry City. He played 635 league games, scoring a total of 138 goals, playing 21 of 25 career seasons in either the English or Scottish top-flight.

He has managed domestic sides Coventry City, Southampton, Celtic and Middlesbrough.

Gordon Strachan

6) Roddy Grant

Roddy Grant

Born in Botswana to Scottish parents, Roddy Grant is a former rugby union player with Edinburgh and Scotland sevens. Grant took over as captain from the injured Scott Forrest during the 2008–09 IRB Sevens World Series.

On 26 December 2013, Grant made his 100th appearance for Edinburgh, leading the team out onto the Murrayfield pitch for the Boxing Day Pro12 derby clash with Glasgow Warriors.

 

7) Mary Queen of Scots

Mary Queen of Scots

One of the most famous red haired Scots is 16th Century monarch, Mary Queen of Scots.

Mary, the only surviving legitimate child of James V of Scotland, acceded to the throne just six days old when her father died. She spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents, and in 1558, she married the Dauphin of France, Francis.

 

8) Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor

Ewan Gordon McGregor, is a Scottish actor, known internationally for his various film roles, including independent dramas, science-fiction epics, and musicals.

Some of his most well-known roles include heroin addict Mark Renton in the drama films Trainspotting and sequal T2 Trainspotting. He is also known for his star role as Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

 

9) Alex McLeish

Alex McLeish

Another footballer to feature in our list. Alexander McLeish is a Scottish football manager and former player. Born in Glasgow in 1959 , McLeish played as a central defender for Aberdeen during their 1980s glory years, making nearly 500 League appearances for the club, and won 77 caps for Scotland.

 

10) Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox

Ann “Annie” Lennox, is an Aberdonian singer, songwriter, political activist and philanthropist. After achieving moderate success in the late 1970s as part of the new wave band The Tourists, she and fellow musician David A. Stewart went on to achieve major international success in the 1980s as Eurythmics.

With a total of eight Brit Awards, which includes being named Best British Female Artist a record six times, Lennox has been named the “Brits Champion of Champions”.
