With the US Masters golf tournament taking place until Sunday evening, the golf season if officially here. The minds of many golfers will turn towards the summer and the hope for some great rounds across a variety of courses.
Press & Journal Travel have had a look at FORE! (or four, if you’d prefer?) locations for a golf break. We’ve also got hotel options available in each location for ultimate convenience.
Edinburgh
Scotland’s capital has an abundance of golf courses for amateurs and professionals to test themselves. East Lothian especially has been on the map in recent years with Gullane hosting the Scottish Open last summer, while nearby Muifield has been a regular course on The Open rotation, and last hosted the tournament in 2013.
In and around the city centre – amateurs are spoilt for choice with notable courses to choose from including: Silverknowes Golf Club, Prestonfield Golf Club and Duddingstone Golf Club to name a few.
St Andrews
Famous for being ‘the home of golf’ – St Andrews is home to the Old Course at St. Andrews Links. The sense of grandeur and history for those that visit to play is impossible to match. The course is within easy walking distance of the town itself, which is ideal for exploring the centre even if the stay at the 19th hole is longer than planned.
As well as the Old Course, which is expensive to play, St Andrews has lots of alternative courses such as the Jubilee Course and Kingsbarns Golf Links.
Inverness
The Capital of the Highlands is a wonderful city for golf – most notably the city features the magnificent Castle Stuart Golf Club on the banks of the Moray Firth. The course has received international praise and will once again this summer host the 2016 Scottish Open. Other playing options are Inverness Golf Club, Torvean Golf Course and Fairways Golf Course.
Isle of Arran
The Isle of Arran is often described as ‘Scotland in miniature’ so it’s only appropriate that the island features some golf courses. It won’t take long to notice either, the ferry sailing from Ardrossan on the Scottish mainland sails to Arran’s largest settlement, Brodick. Here lies Brodick Golf Club. If scenery is your thing, then just a few miles south of Brocick lies Lamlash Golf Course which sits above Lamlash Bay looking past Holy Isle on to the Firth of Clyde.
