Award-winning family-run baker The Hame Bakery is celebrating its expansion after opening its second branch in Peterhead.
Launching in 2002, the shop has become a much-loved part of the community over the years with locals religiously stopping by to indulge in a selection of fresh goods.
Owner Patrick Jackson received the keys to The Hame Bakery’s second premises, on Clerkhill Road, in August and has been working around the clock to prepare the space for its opening date, which was today.
Origins of The Hame Bakery
Patrick, originally from Ayrshire, relocated to the north-east after leaving school and started an apprenticeship with Simmers of Hatton in July 1977.
Simmers of Hatton closed in 2002 after 114 years of production.
It was a biscuit factory that supplied biscuits to shops like Marks and Spencer before being purchased by McVities and then acquired by Murdoch Allan and Sons.
Patrick said: “We were transferred to Peterhead under the Crawford name where I was a confectioner for 20 years.
“I also worked with Chalmers of Bucksburn and had a short spell with JG Ross of Inverurie, before opening my own bakery on Queen Street in Peterhead in 2002.”
The bakery team currently comprises six shop staff, two bakers, Patrick, his wife Linda, and his son Patrick Jr.
Butteries, pies and doughnuts
All products at The Hame Bakery are made from scratch.
The team produces more than 2,500 butteries per week and has won the Best Butteries in Scotland award on two separate occasions, as well as numerous other awards for their pies and savouries.
The second bakeshop will have a selection of coffee and hot food to takeaway, including stovies, soups, macaroni, pies and sausage rolls.
There will also be the normal bakery selection with goods ranging from cream rolls, apple tarts, hot cross buns and truffles, to name a few.
Patrick is employing five additional staff to operate the new bakery. This includes four shop staff and a bakery worker to make fresh pies, butteries, sandwiches and pancakes (among other items) on site.
Opening times will be 8am to 2pm Monday to Saturday initially.
