O’Caykx has been on the north-east food scene for as long as I can recall.
And yes, it has been on my radar during this time, too. Any cake fan in the area is sure to have been in the same boat.
The multi-award-winning business, located on Portlethen’s Bankhead Drive, prides itself on the fact it can produce a cake whatever the customer’s style, budget, or taste.
The eclectic range of bakes the team creates amazes me.
One day, images are shared of a vibrant football-inspired 13th birthday cake on their social media. The next, there’s a line-up of pictures showcasing an immaculate wedding cake adorned with silk flowers and ribbons.
I have heard from a number of friends that O’Caykx products are exceptional when ordered for a celebration. I don’t doubt that, but how do their Too Good To Go bags fare?
What I got my hands on…
It had been a long time coming, but I finally managed to reserve a bag from the popular cake maker.
It could be collected any time between 11.30am and 5pm. I headed there sharp and managed to secure it at around noon.
There were five bags visible on the collection counter – and you would be correct in thinking I picked the one with the most items inside. It would be a crime if I hadn’t, considering I had the option to select my own for a change.
It was back to the office afterward, where I unbagged the contents and took a closer look.
There was an A5 sheet of paper detailing what flavours of cakes – including a double chocolate cake, cream vanilla cake, and a raspberry and white chocolate cupcake – were inside along with their ingredients.
Some of my colleagues tucked into the chocolate option. Voicing polar opposite thoughts, one described it as “moist” and “tasty”, while the other wasn’t sold and felt it was more on the dry side.
However, I can safely say the sweet treat that I had the pleasure of indulging in, the cream vanilla cake, was easily one of my favourite cakes to date in terms of taste and texture.
It consisted of two layers – one was a light and fluffy vanilla sponge with tender crumbs, while the other was a buttercream icing. Both were stellar and I must admit the treat as a whole was hard to stop eating.
A new and welcoming texture was thrown into the mix with the addition of sprinkles, which were scattered across the icing.
I was assured the cupcake was of the same calibre, with a subtle dollop of raspberry sauce adding a tangy element.
The total for all three bakes from O’Caykx came to £10.50, according to the advert on my Too Good To Go app. I paid £3.50 for the bag, so a saving of £6.50 was made.
Was it worth it?
O’Caykx in Portlethen provided a mouth-watering line-up of bakes in my Too Good To Go bag – and I’m sure those that enjoyed the four left remaining after my visit would say the same.
The cakes tasted relatively fresh and looked enticing, but above all, I absolutely loved the information sheet provided. It was a fantastic touch.
