Aberdeen’s latest coffee pitstop has officially opened after welcoming its first customers.
The Hatch at Ninety-Nine finally swung open its doors today, becoming one of the city’s first outdoor coffee stops.
Located at well-known cocktail bar Ninety-Nine Bar and Kitchen, customers will find the hatch for the business down the side of the building which lies on Back Wynd.
Hot drinks, snacks and bakes, plus other goodies will be served from the outdoor hatch which has already piqued the interest of coffee fans across the north-east.
Martin Farmer, operations director at Monkey Bars Limited which is the parent company of Aberdeen cocktail bars Orchid and Ninety-Nine Bar and Kitchen, says the new addition was inspired by the growing popularity of coffee.
He said: “People are now looking past the conventional coffee chains and looking for something different. With this in mind we wanted to open The Hatch and showcase what our city and shire has to offer in terms of coffee roasting.
“Since becoming a parent, I’ve realised pushing a pram and wanting a coffee can become quite difficult. Often you have to bump the buggy up some steps and navigate it through small spaces. Now you don’t need to do that, no steps and hopefully no hassle.”
What drinks will be available at The Hatch at Ninety-Nine?
The team at Ninety-Nine have worked with local coffee roaster Figment Coffee for several years and will have a range of coffees from the firm to serve up.
The Wonderland blend will be the house blend as its caramel and chocolate notes make it the perfect everyday coffee.
Products from Long Walk Co., an Aberdeenshire roaster, will also be stocked. Colin Redman who is behind the coffee, is a co-owner of Banchory’s Birdhouse Cafe which he runs with his partner Ruth. They will supply The Hatch at Ninety-Nine with single origin coffee beans which the team look to switch up monthly.
Decaf options from both roasters will also be available.
As for the takeaway coffees, the usual suspects of flat whites, lattes and cappuccinos will all be on the menu, alongside babyccinos for children. For those who bring their dogs to The Hatch at Ninety-Nine, they will also be able to purchase pooch juice for their four-legged friend.
For those who prefer hot chocolates a milk and white version will be available. Stacked with whipped cream, marshmallows, sprinkles and a flake, Martin says this is what his daughter describes as “the perfect hot chocolate”.
To get customers in the festive spirit, a non-alcoholic mulled wine will be on offer.
What light bites will be available?
Working with local bakers from the city and shire, customers will find delicious baked from the team at Upperkrust on Upperkirkgate, the Vegan Baker’s popular cinnamon buns and Sourcloud Bakes’ famous cruffins to begin with.
Martin says the offering may change, and will likely expand to adapt to guests wants and needs. However, he guarantees everything from croissants, empire biscuits, Danish Pastries and doughrings plus more will be available.
When will it be open?
Open seven days a week, the outdoor hatch is designed to be a place to stop for a quick coffee on the way to work, at lunchtime, or on the way home from work.
At weekends Martin hopes that those out shopping will also pop by for a quick coffee on-the-go.
The Hatch at Ninety-Nine is open from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.
Opening hours may be adapted to suit customers’ needs.
And how much can we expect to pay?
While some venues charge extra for non-dairy milks, the team at The Hatch at Ninety-Nine will not.
For those who are looking for a coffee and a bite to eat, you can expect to pay £5.70 for a flat white and a cinnamon bun. A dirty chai latte and a Biscoff bite will cost £5.90.
Doing their bit for charity this weekend
The team at Monkey Bars Limited have teamed up to support two local charities close to their hearts.
Tomorrow (Saturday December 10), hot drinks will be offered up for free between 10am and 2pm. In return the team ask that each guest makes a small donation towards Friends of Anchor and Abernecessities.
Martin added: “Both charities are held very close to my heart and both do an outstanding job on our doorstep. Please take a moment to follow the work they do”.
