As I walked along Union Street in the cold, the wind and the rain I started to feel I may have made a mistake by popping out for lunch.
However, as soon as I arrived at the Adelphi Kitchen I knew I was onto a winner.
The cosy, warm and homely atmosphere hit me as soon as I walked in the front door. On noticing I was a little damp and ever so slightly cold, the hostess took my coat and showed me to my table.
And as I took my seat, the heater behind my legs ensured that the cold and wet of Union Street was nothing more than a distant memory.
As I waited on a friend joining me, the cushions on the seats and the cook books on the shelves made me feel like I could be in my own mother’s house, however, when the menus arrived, the quality of food on offer quickly reminded me I wasn’t in the family home (no offence, mum).
The Adelphi Kitchen prides itself on “the range and quality of our local produce in Aberdeen” and that wide range of tasty local produce is certainly reflected on the lunch menu.
The variety of options on the menu meant that choosing what to have for lunch was a far from straight forward decision.
The Salt ‘n’ Pepper Sliced Pastrami, the King Kong BLT Waffles and Fat Tony’s Egg Fried Bagel all stood out, however, after a great deal of consideration I eventually opted for the Southside Steak.
And I wasn’t disappointed.
Served on an open sourdough, the chargrilled steak came with blue cheese, mushroom ketchup, crispy onions and a delightful salad.
When ordering, I was a little wary of the mushroom ketchup – I’m far more used to the slightly more traditional tomato member of the ketchup family – however, the mushroom flavouring complemented the steak perfectly.
The steak (chargrilled Adelphi Kitchen style) was cooked medium and along with the soft sour dough and the crunchy salad, it made for the perfect lunch.
All for only £7 was a bargain and meant I had £3 left on my £10 budget to add some thick cut chips. Such was the healthy portion size, the chips weren’t really necessary but I certainly was not made to regret ordering them – homemade, crispy on the outside yet soft inside – perfect for any lunch.
As I write this and think about the meal, I’m getting awfully peckish. Now where is that number to book a table at The Adelphi Kitchen…
