The Farquharson family are preparing to swap rural life near Stonehaven for the bright lights of London, and have already anticipated just how much they’ll miss their gorgeous family home.
Number four Mergie Steading in Rickarton has been home for Jane, Craig, and their two young daughters, for the past two years, but job relocation sadly means they’re preparing to leave the four-bedroom house behind.
Designed by Peterkin Homes, it is in immaculate condition and the couple have so far been its only owners.
It was bought as a country escape and the family have been able to relax and enjoy community life.
Seven-year-old Kate and five-year-old Anna have loved living in the countryside, and Jane will miss having close-knit neighbours.
“We were attracted to the house because it was so beautifully designed and to such a high standard, all we needed to do was move in,” said Jane, who is an HR manager.
“It’s immaculate throughout and we were very attracted to the sense of open-plan space, especially as we love having visitors.”
The generous lounge is ideal for entertaining, with decoration kept neutral and stylish.
There are stunning views of the open countryside with patio doors leading to the garden.
A feature log-burning stove set in the wall adds a contemporary twist, and will certainly be a welcome addition on winter nights.
The lounge is open plan with the dining kitchen which has contrasting white units and a grey tiled floor.
“I loved the idea of being able to chat to guests and cook at the same time, we’ve certainly enjoyed a dinner party or two since moving in,” said Jane.
“It’s the heart of the home and where we spend the most time as a family.”
The dining area is incredibly versatile and again, there is access to the garden via patio doors.
You can just imagine having breakfast with the sunlight streaming through, and there’s enough space for visitors come Christmas day.
A utility room provides extra storage, not to mention plenty of room for muddy wellies.
There’s also a lovely family room that would make a brilliant play room, but is equally suited as a snug space for movie night. A toilet completes the downstairs accommodation.
It was the spacious galleried landing that sealed the deal for Jane though.
“It sounds silly but I loved the staircase and it’s a great example of just how well-designed the house is,” said Jane.
“We also love our master bedroom, it’s simple but beautiful.”
The master bedroom has three Velux windows with lovely views over the countryside alongside a quirky lower level window.
The modern en suite shower room has a large walk-in double shower.
The remaining three bedrooms all have fitted double wardrobes and are of good size, and one is also en suite.
“Guests have come to stay quite a lot since we moved in and there’s a great deal of privacy in the house,” said Jane.
“You don’t feel like you’re staying at someone’s house, you’ve actually got your own space.
“All the bedrooms have been decorated to a high standard; I think guests find that it’s the perfect escape here.”
The family bathroom has an L-shaped bath with overhead shower and stylish wood-style flooring.
You can soak up the impressive views from the extensive landscaped gardens.
There’s also a pleasant courtyard area which will be ideal for alfresco dining.
Parking won’t be a problem thanks to a double garage and there is a shared access drive and a further exclusive parking area.
Jane and Craig have enjoyed bringing their girls up in the countryside with great walking routes on their doorstep.
Rickarton is only a short drive away from the lovely coastal town of Stonehaven where there is an excellent range of local amenities, alongside good primary and secondary schools.
Closing the door at Mergie Steading will signify a massive change for the Farquharsons, but they’ve at least had two very happy years.
“It will certainly be different but we couldn’t have been happier here, and we hope the new owners will love it just as much,” said Jane.
“It’s very much a blank canvas, and it will be perfect for a family who loves the countryside.”
The property is a fixed price of £450,000.
