For sale: Donald Trump’s first mansion, writes Susan Welsh
Put your money in bricks and mortar and you won’t go far wrong, they say – and it certainly looks like the old adage still applies.
Tycoon Donald Trump’s first mansion has gone on the market with a price tag that shows it’s now worth more than 13 times the amount he originally paid for it.
As chairman and president of The Trump Organisation, US entrepreneur Donald Trump invests in, develops, sells and operates real estate and golf courses worldwide including Trump International Golf Links at Balmedie near Aberdeen. But it’s a home he and his glamorous first wife, Ivana, purchased in 1982, that’s got the property market talking.
The couple paid $4million for Indian Harbor, a mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut, with more than nearly six acres of land. The house, which was originally built for $200,000 in 1939, is now on the market priced at $54 million.
When the Trumps bought the estate, Ivana was also charged with refurbishing the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. As a result, she was able to use many of the same materials in the decoration of the home, creating a residence dripping in gold leaf and other elaborate trappings of elegance. When they divorced in 1991, Ivana received the mansion in the property settlement, which she eventually sold for $15million in 1998.
The new owners immediately began a renovation to tone it down to more liveable neutrals and added tennis courts as well as a 4,000-square-foot addition which includes guest suites, a lap pool and a sauna.
The Georgian Colonial-style main house and a guest house have eight bedrooms, 13 baths, a three-storey rotunda foyer with double grand staircase, formal rooms overlooking views of the pool, grounds and Long Island Sound, home theatre, a putting green, multiple terraces and patios, tennis courts, acres of waterfront, a private boat dock and three fully-equipped staff apartments.
The mansion abounds with venues for grand or intimate entertaining, while at the same time warm and inviting for daily family living.
All it needs now is a new billionaire.
