Visit Aberdeen this weekend and explore one of the city’s most impressive homes on the market, writes Cheryl Livingstone
One of the first things I noticed about the Granite City when I moved here two years ago was just how many interesting and beautiful houses it is home to.
From grand mansions on Rubislaw to gorgeous granite family homes in Rosemount, it is a treasure trove of architectural brilliance.
Summerhill House at 17 North Anderson Drive in Aberdeen is the latest home in the Granite City to catch my eye. It is on the market for offers over £1,000,000.
The category B-listed granite Georgian seven-bedroom mansion was built around 1800 and is surrounded by around 1.5acres of grounds.
Set back from the road and accessed by a private tree-lined avenue, it offers privacy and seclusion. Its grounds are so secluded you would probably forget that you are in such a convenient city location.
The gardens are a haven for children to play, for adults to relax or entertain, and especially idyllic for the enthusiastic gardener.
Spanning three floors, the mansion is equally impressive and has ample space for a growing family. You wouldn’t know it looking at these photographs, but the house was badly damaged internally by a fire around six years ago.
It has been reconstructed and refurbished throughout with new plasterwork, insulation and a slate roof, with subsequent redecoration, new plumbing and electrics coming later.
The kitchens and bathrooms were installed and an efficient oil-fired central heating system also added. In effect, what has been created is a modern, easy and cost-effective home within a traditional exterior, in a lovely setting.
This would appeal to those whose dream it is to live in a grand old home without all the hassle an older property can bring.
Go visit this home and I am sure you will find many rooms that leave you thinking about them long after you leave. Some of my favourites include the formal dining room, a large light-filled lounge, cosy sitting room, kitchen with ample work and storage space plus all the good-sized bedrooms.
My favourite, however, has to be the quaint music room – an amazing space with exposed granite walls and ceiling panelling and a french door and glazed screen leading to the garden.
