Victorian grandeur and modern conveniences come together beautifully in this Strathpeffer home

Of late, stories have been told of people wanting to head for the Highlands to improve their health and wellbeing.

Check through old newspapers and you’ll find rather similar sounding stories from the Victorian era…

Strathpeffer, for example, really took shape and prospered during the second half of the 19th Century when droves of wealthy Londoners came to benefit from the health-giving properties of its natural springs.

That put the village firmly on the global map and it was regarded as a renowned European health resort.

Stylish hotels with handsome architecture were built to cope with the influx of visitors, while the grand pavilion and pump room where people enjoyed the waters, still stands today.

Many grand, private homes were also built at that time.

Each house in the village conservation area has its own style, but all retain the grandeur and generous proportions of the Victorian era.

Among them is Overdale, a charming Victorian villa on an elevated site which beautiful south-facing views over the village.

It’s on the market at offers over £345,000.

The current owner of the grand, detached house has spent the last 25 years undertaking a comprehensive process of renovation and refurbishment of the property – keeping the feel of the Victorian original while adding modern conveniences.

The house has been reconfigured to provide four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a study, sitting room, living-dining room and new kitchen.

In the kitchen there is a refurbished Aga and the original sandstone chimney surround has been restored, adding to the traditional feel.

The kitchen also benefits from attractive wooden cabinetry and worktops, pewter pendant light fittings and slate flooring.

The main sitting room is a wonderful room with ornate plasterwork, a woodburning stove and antique fireplace and surround, while at one end is the light-filled dining area, a wonderful space for entertaining.

The family room also has some lovely traditional features including a large bay window with attractive restored wooden surrounds and an enamelled oil-fired stove.

On the first floor there are three good sized bedrooms, each with decorative fireplaces, along with a master bedroom with a well-appointed en-suite bathroom.

Outside, the garden features lawns, mature shrubs and trees, while there’s a covered patio area at the back of the house with a wisteria-clad roof and a single garage.

Phiddy Robertson who is handling the sale of Overdale, said: “This is a much-loved family home and its meticulous refurbishment has resulted in a wonderful property, with many attractive features, welcoming and spacious accommodation.

“The setting is absolutely ideal, in a sheltered position within the conservation area and with lovely south facing views over the village to wooded hills beyond.”
